The Keys Are Frozen. I Know Where the Freezer Is.

Mansion Cleaner

I read Mistress Lynne's post this morning before I touched a single mop. Sat on the edge of the supply cart in the violet corridor outside her suite, the amethyst sconces still dimmed from night, and I read every word about those ice blocks and what lives inside them. Eleven of them. Eleven steel keys sealed into clear blocks of ice in a freezer only she has the code to. I already knew about the freezer. I clean the suite. I have run a cloth along the outside of that door more times than I can count. I have never asked what is in it. But now she has told the whole world and I am standing here with a bucket of lavender-scented water and the particular feeling of a woman who already knew something and has just been officially told it. The thing that landed for me was the ice ceremony. The way those eleven men will kneel in a circle and watch. The way the melting takes two full days. She designed it so the wait is the event. Mistress Lynne understands something about time that most people do not. She knows how to make waiting do the work. I have watched her do it in a dozen different ways in every plum and indigo corner of this mansion and it never stops being the most impressive thing I have ever seen.

I clean every purple corridor in this mansion, which means I clean outside every dungeon door, and I know things about these men that they do not know I know. I know whose floor is cold in the morning because he has been kneeling on it. I know whose sheets I change twice a week without being asked because he cannot sleep inside whatever is happening to him. The man in The Greedy Room, Grant Mason, leaves his door cracked three inches on the mornings after he has done something he is proud of. I have learned to read that three-inch gap the way a doctor reads a chart. Yesterday it was shut. The man in The Corroder of the Unfaithful, Elias Sterling, asked me last Tuesday if I ever find anything interesting in the corridors. I told him the corridors are just corridors and kept mopping. He watched me the way a man watches something he knows he cannot afford and has already started calculating how to afford it anyway. I let him. The thing about moving through this mansion the way I do, invisible and everywhere, is that the men never quite decide what to do with me. I am in a purple cleaning uniform and I am a former cam girl and I have been chosen specifically by Mistress Lynne, and those three facts do not resolve into anything they can organize. They want to tip me and they want me to want them and they want to know if I am watching. I am always watching. I just never tell them what I see.

Here is the fantasy I have been carrying through the lavender west corridor for the past three weeks. One of them finally does it. Pays the full one million dollars. Signs the contract. I am there when the ice block comes out of the freezer because someone has to carry it and Chef Anthony is cooking and it will be me and I know it. I carry it through the mansion on a silver tray the way I carry everything through here: like it is completely ordinary and completely mine at the same time. I set it on the table in his dungeon and I step back against the aubergine wall and I watch the key sit there inside its cage of ice, neither free nor trapped, just waiting for physics to make the decision. He is sitting on the edge of his bed, still locked, watching the ice the way a man watches the only thing that matters. And I am the last person in the room and the first person who will leave, and I lean over to pick up the empty tray and I say something I have already decided in advance and I walk out. I never tell anyone what I said. The corridor smells like lavender. I keep mopping. Mistress Lynne runs the most beautiful operation I have ever been paid to clean and I would not trade this purple underground world for anything.
